Hurricane Sandy aftermath |
Hi, everyone. I'm so sorry I never took the time to update you on how I fared
throughout Hurricane Sandy until now. As I'm sure you all know by following
the news on this storm, Long Island (where I live) was hit terribly, and my neighborhood
was no exception. I was out of power for seven full days, then lost it temporarily again
during the Nor'easter that hit us a few days later. My brother, who just got married
last weekend, was out until the day after his wedding! Needless to say, it has been
a stressful time. But I must express how our issues paled in comparison to the hundreds
of victims in the tri-state area who not only lost power, but their homes, and some even
their lives, as well. This storm was devastating, to say the least, and it will take much
longer than a couple of months for us to get back on our feet physically, and
especially and above all, emotionally. I can attest to that personally.

Halloween, 2012 (the darkest Halloween night ever.) |
I'm sure a lot of you are wondering how my Halloween went amidst all of this!
We were still out of power during my favorite holiday, and I'd be lying if I said I enjoyed
myself this year. With the lack of lighting and heat and the surge of stress and worry,
it was very hard to get into the spirit of things in my house. Not to mention, most of
my decorations had already been taken down from the storm, and there were too
many other things going on for me to put them back up again, so I felt all my hard
work this year was for nothing. But on the bright side, we had TONS of trick or treaters.
Isn't that funny? I had bought so much candy before the hurricane in anticipation for
the many children in my neighborhood, but after Sandy hit, I was almost positive
that no one would show up on Halloween night... Wrong! I had more trick or treaters
than I think I ever had. I guess the blackout gave everybody a little cabin fever,
so what better way to alleviate that than doing a little trick or treating?!
So, all in all, even though Halloween this year was largely a disappointed for me,
I have to think positively towards the future and exclaim:
Next Halloween, I'm going ALL OUT!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
In other news, it's Thanksgiving time again!
I'll be having it here at my grandfather's, and plan on baking this for dessert:
My mouth is watering already... Thanks, SB! ♥ |
Here's wishing everyone a happy and
filling Turkey Day! And tell me...
filling Turkey Day! And tell me...
What will YOU be baking this year?
Gobble, gobble!
yeah!!! erin is back!!! i missed you and worried about you! though it was a different halloween than you planned, it will be one you will never forget. like the year i set the thanksgiving centerpiece on fire at my sisters home, i should write a post on that and think i will! it is so wonderful that in the midst of all that you went through, the kids still came out in force! have a wonderful thanksgiving with your too cute guy and your mom!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to hear from you, Erin! I agree with the first comment - this will be a Halloween you will always remember! Next year will be different, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteLove that Pumpkin Cheesecake from Susan Branch! I've baked Tea Time Tassies (Pecan Tarts). No corn syrup in these, so they are a good choice for someone who is trying to leave out foods with corn syrup in them. There will be a Sweet Potato Pie baked on Wednesday.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Glad to hear you are at the very least ok! What shocker that storm turned out to be. You guys dealt with way more issues down there. I'm so sorry your Halloween was ruined! It's so weird that we've had these monster storms two years in a row on Halloween. This is the second year they had to reschedule trick or treating in my town! So strange. I like your attitude about next year, though! Go all out! :) Happy Thanksgiving, Erin!
ReplyDeleteSo good to hear from you Erin. How awful about the loss of power, but so relieved you all are fine! At least all the kids got to go Trick or Treating, and you didn't have to force yourself to eat all that candy!!
ReplyDeleteI will be preparing, as usual, the whole big meal from start to finish. Apple pie and pumpkin pie for dessert. I will have to think about Susan Branch's cheesecake though. Happy Thanksgiving!
Oh Erin, that was terrible. You have been through a LOT. God help all those still without power. Yes, you are right, that was a most devastating storm. Devastating destruction.
ReplyDeleteBut, thank God, you are young, alive, (in love---haha) and have many many more Halloweens in the years ahead.
Thank heavens you are okay so thanks for the update.
I never made Susan Branch's pumpkin cheesecake but I look at it every day on my calendar. Wish it would become real so I could reach in with a fork and eat some! Ha ha ha
Take care and a blessed Thanksgiving to you as you recuperate from the storm. Susan
So glad to hear you are OK, Erin. What a terrible storm! Have a Happy Thanksgiving with your loved ones.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how you fared out there on Long Island. Up in the Boston area, it wasn't as bad. Of course, the coastal areas got hit pretty hard but inland not so much. We had downed trees in my area but did not lose eletricity. I don't think I have ever heard wind like that! And the basement flooded after the next Noreaster but overall I have a lot to be thankful for.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
I'm happy to hear that you are safe and sound. I know it will be difficult, but I'm sure time and the community will come together to help everyone heal and rebuild.
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving, your dessert sounds amazing!
oh wow, what a traumatic halloween! So glad you guys got through it, hope this year is much better!~
